Ramsey Runner

The Hereward Relay

A four stage relay starting from Peterborough Cathedral to the Ely Sports Ground. The early races finished at Ely Cathedral but crossing busy roads was a little dangerous. Distances vary over each leg and the terrain is a mixture of road and footpaths. Although the route is fairly flat there isn't much shelter, leaving runners exposed to the elements. So on the day it's mainly down to the weather.

The current stages are as follows:

Stage From – To Distance
1 Peterborough to Whittlesey 6.5 Mi
2 Whittlesey to March 10.5 Mi
3 March to Welney 11.3 Mi
4 Welney to Ely 10.4 Mi
Total   38.4 Mi

On Saturday we were beset with violent Gales and things were not looking too promising for Sunday with our first significant frost of the year due. Sure enough 6 hardy RRR set off in sub-zero temperatures at 09:00. By stage 3 the sun was out but, it had gone behind the clouds by the end of stage 4.

Taking a weather positive out of this years event; the wind was in the North and behind us. Apart from that there was almost constant rain/drizzle and the course was wetter than a wet thing. The Rockets lived up to their name and came 6th overall with Shaun Walton taking the club stage record with a 39:48. Darren just managed to out pip Simon for best position to finish 3rd overrall on Stage 4. Well done to our Hereward newcomers Beth and Ed.

The 2nd running of the event this year was another cold affair. Inspite of the selection of weather it was another excellent day for Ramsey Road Runners at the Hereward Relay, the A team came 15th overall with Michelle Brett taking home the prize for 1st lady on Stage 3. Andrew broke the Ramsey club record for Stage 2 by almost 3 minutes and now holds the records for Stages 1 and 2, with Simon holding on to the stage 3 and 4 best times. Darren had a superb run to finish 9th overall on Stage 4 and had a good chance to grab the stage record if they hadn't extended it by a mile and a half! Well done to our Hereward newcomers Ruth, Shaun and Matt and a big thank you to Edek Rej and Rob White for stepping in to replace our injured runners.

The weather this year was very windy, however, from the west.  Good conditions for a PB.  A total of  114 relay teams took part this year and there were 33 Ultra Distance runners who individually ran the whole course of approx 38.4 miles.  All runners received a well deserved horse brass.  Well done to our runners and special thanks go to our team of helpers on the day.

With atrocious conditions at the start and getting worse every mile, the blizzard finish at Whittlesey, the race this year certainly was a test of stamina and character.  Gradually the whether abated and although cold the sun was actually shining by the time the runners reached Welney.  With the recent rain it was not known if the Welney washes would be open, however the water had gone down sufficiently for the race to finish in Ely.
