Lauren came to triathlon having already been to two Paralympic Games as a swimmer. She went to her first Paralympics in Beijing aged just 15 and competed again at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. She was born without a right forearm.

Lauren already has a gold medal from Rio, won at the World Swimming Championships in 2009 as part of a British relay squad that also broke the world record.

She first got into Triathlon after her uncle, who is a triathlete, suggested she should try it. She entered her first triathlon, the British Championships, in Nottingham 2011 and finished second. At the Para triathlon World Championships in Auckland (October 2012) Lauren won silver in the Aquathlon (swim-run) event and finished 5th in the Triathlon (Tri4 classification).

She is originally from Peterborough but currently based in Portsmouth, where she is studying for a Masters in Business after completing her Psychology Degree at Portsmouth University. She previously studied at Kelly College, Devon. She is coached by Paul Hogg (Swimming) and Sam Warriner (Triathlete Coach based in NZ).

Lauren is part of the UK Sport World Class Lottery Funded British Paratriathlon squad.

PT4 GB athlete Lauren Steadman hasn’t lost a race since May 2014, and having won the Olympic test event in August the reigning world champ went in to the final with a sizeable target on her back. Never one to play it safe, however, Steadman pushed hard to guarantee her 10th consecutive win.

“That was probably my toughest race yet”, said Steadman. Obviously the standard has risen a lot since last year. I didn’t have the best swim, on the bike I was holding, I wasn’t getting further away and then my head coach and my father said ‘look, you’ve got to have the best 5k of your life.’ [US National Paratri champion and eventual silver medallist] Grace Norman is a track runner and has the ability to outrun me easily. I just focused on my form and it took me home.

“This is a stepping stone for next year and again I’ve got to up my game 10 times as much because next year they’re going to come at me twice as hard.”

Tell us about your disability:
I am missing my lower right arm just below the elbow. As a child I would always want two arms, but over the years I have come to love being individual and relish all the challenges!

Why the switch from swimming:
In May 2011 I competed at  British Triathlon Nationals and came 2nd,  realising I had transferable skills from swimming to triathlon. I then got asked to represent GBR a few more times in World Championships, and decided to make triathlon my new challenge, and have found immense enjoyment from pushing my body to the limits in not only one but three sports.
